Installing Mom’s Colts Feather Flag

I sell Colts Feather Flags on the internet. I’ve sold almost a hundred feather flags, but last Sunday was the first one that I installed, at my mother’s house.

Lessons Learned

1. Use a rubber mallet to install the 20″ ground stake.  Even though the ground stake is fairly sturdy, I’m pretty certain that it’s not ‘hit-me-hard-with-a-sledge-hammer’ rough, so take it easy.

2. When installing the  ground stake into the ground, every few inches, put the flag pole in to see if it’s pointing straight up.  If it’s not, readjust the angle accordingly as you hammer the next few inches in (TWSS).

3. Which brings us to number 3.  Do not hammer the ground stake very deeply into the ground unless you don’t plan on moving it.  It is tough to get out once it’s in the ground.

4.  If you break rule number 3, here’s how to remove the ground stake that’s stuck in the ground:

A. Find a piece of wood around a foot or 2 long and fairly skinny.  A few inch diameter dowel rod would be be perfect.

B. Hammer from about 6 inches vertically away from the stake, hammer the wood down into the ground but at a 45 degree angle towards the stake.

C. Make sure that the wood is solidly hammered against the stake.

D. Pull straight up on the stake.

E. It should come out fairly (okay, “relatively”) easily.

F. If it doesn’t your problem is beyond the scope of this blog post, sorry!

G. You could always buy a replacement feather flag pole and stake.

5. Position the flag at least 10 feet away from any part of  a building or house.  If it’s too close to the house, the house will block the wind from that direction, and the flag won’t fly in a super slight breeze.

6. Make sure that flag won’t hit the gutters.  Gutters are metal and will damage your flag if it hits it routinely while blowing in the wind.  Yes, I know Lesson 5 should have taken care of this, but some of you are stubborn.

7. Even slight contact with a bush could be enough to keep the entire flag from flying in slight slight breezes, so make sure the flag doesn’t hit the bush or trees.
